For the past couple of weeks, we have been doing math number and problem of the day together. We first do it as a group on the smartboard then the students record it in their math notebooks.
To explain, the number of the day is a 2-digit number. Students have to tell me different ways to make the number. We might give answers such as even or odd, printing the number word, using coins to make that amount, drawing ten frames, using base ten blocks, using tally marks, or writing the numbers that come before and after.
Then there is a word problem for the students to work through. They have to find the number sentence and answer. Then answer the word problem in a complete sentence.
Starting next week, the students will be asked to do this on their own.

Estimating
We are working on estimating. First, we take a guess on how many items there are just by looking at the whole group. Then we make a group of two or five or ten and decide if we want to change our estimate now that we see what that many look like. Each time we count out a group, we can change our estimate. We are getting much better at estimating using referents!

Brain Breaks
When the students have been working hard, they often need a brain break before we move onto something else. We use many different things to do this, but lately we started using some youtube videos to get us up and moving!
Finding the Main Idea
We have been learning about how to find the main idea of a story, or what it is is mostly about. Today, the students worked together to read a story and decide what the main idea was.

Math Website for Practice
In addition to the xtramath.org website that I sent home information on, here is another website which is directly linked to our NB grade 2 curriculum.
